How to choose an academic writing tool

Citations from real records

Ask where a citation comes from. A tool that cites from a scholarly record, a DOI or your own library gives you a paper you can open and check; a citation written from a model's memory may point at nothing.

Styles and your existing library

Check that the tool supports the style your course or journal asks for, and that it can import the sources you already keep, for example as a .bib or .ris file.

Privacy and training

Read what the tool says about your drafts. Some say plainly that your writing is never used to train AI models; others leave it to a settings page or say nothing.

Price and limits

Compare what the free plan really allows each day or month, and whether the yearly price is shown before you pay. Limits on suggestions, reviews and exports matter more than the headline price.

Questions students ask when choosing a writing tool

What is the best Jenni AI alternative for academic writing?

It depends on the job. If you want an outline, sentence suggestions, citations from real scholarly records and a review before you submit, Papero does all of that in one editor. If you mainly polish finished text, a grammar tool such as Grammarly or Paperpal may be enough.

Which AI writing tools cite real papers?

Papero cites from records you choose: OpenAlex search across 250M+ papers, a DOI, PMID, arXiv ID or ISBN, or your own library, and search results mark retracted papers and preprints. Other writing assistants describe paper search too; check each one's page for where its papers come from.

Is there a free AI tool for writing research papers?

Yes. Papero's Free plan gives you 30 accepted suggestions a day and 3 reviews a month, and in-text citations work in full; the reference list shows blurred until you upgrade to Plus. Several other tools on this page also have a free plan; the cards above say what each one allows.

Can I use Papero with Zotero or Mendeley?

Yes. Export a .bib or .ris file from Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote and import it into your Papero library, or import from Zotero with your own API key or from Mendeley by signing in at Mendeley. Papero does not keep the two in step, so import again when your library changes. On Plus, the Word export carries live Zotero citations: open it in Word with the Zotero plugin to change the style or add sources.

Is my writing used to train AI models?

Not on Papero: your documents are never used to train AI models, and text you send to an AI feature is processed by OpenAI, which does not use it for training. For other tools, the comparison pages quote what each one says.

How is Papero different from ChatGPT?

Papero works inside your document: it follows your outline and section prompts, and its citations come from real scholarly records you choose, not from a model's memory.

Which citation styles does Papero support?

Over 10,000, including APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA 11, Nature and ACS, with Word export in a default or double-spaced manuscript layout.

How did you check these comparisons?

We read each tool's own website, pricing page and privacy pages in October 2026, re-checked several of them in November 2026, and kept a dated note of every fact with its source. Prices change, so check a vendor's pricing page before you buy, and tell us at contact@papero.ai if something here is out of date.
