Everything you need to write a cited paper

Plan the paper, write with suggestions, cite real papers, ask your PDFs, check the draft and export it to Word. These are the parts of Papero you will use most, shown as they look in the app.

01 · Outline and write

Start from an outline, then write with help

Describe your paper and Papero builds a two-level outline with a prompt for every section. As you type, it suggests the next sentence in your document's language, and every word stays your choice.

Writing a research paper with Papero →
  • Outlines in IMRaD, with AI-generated headings or with no headings at all, or import a .docx you already started
  • Autocomplete: accept the whole sentence or one word at a time
  • Rewrite any selection: simplify, shorten, expand, make it more academic, fix the grammar or follow your own instruction
  • On Plus, suggestions and section drafts can carry citations: your own sources first, then papers Papero finds and checks

02 · Cite

Cite real papers as you write

One click finds papers for the sentence you are writing. Search 250M+ papers through OpenAlex or look one up by DOI, PMID, arXiv ID or ISBN, and Papero inserts the in-text citation and builds the reference list.

Finding sources with Papero →
  • Retracted papers and preprints are marked in the results
  • Over 10,000 citation styles, from APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago to individual journals' own, found by journal or style name
  • Several sources in one citation, and manual entries for anything without an identifier

03 · Library

Keep every source in one library

Every source you cite or save lands in your library, with search and collections. Upload a paper's PDF and Papero reads its full text, so suggestions can cite the right passage, with its page when it is certain. Bring in what you already have: import BibTeX or RIS files from Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote or Google Scholar, or import from Zotero with your own API key or from Mendeley by signing in at Mendeley.

04 · Chat

Ask your PDFs, get cited answers

Open Chat beside your document and ask what a paper found or how two studies compare. Answers come only from your library and the open document, and cite the passage they used, with its page when it is certain.

AI writing tools for researchers →
  • Pick papers: type @ and a name under Add a paper to ask about those papers alone
  • Insert into document puts an answer into your text with its citations; click a source to cite just that paper
  • On Free, answers come from your own PDFs
  • On Plus, answers can also draw on the titles and abstracts of library papers that have no PDF

05 · Workflows

Give Papero a topic, come back to a first draft

Start a Workflow and Papero researches the topic in the background, then writes a first draft of a literature review or a research gap analysis, with cited papers. You can leave the page while it runs.

Writing a literature review with Papero →
  • Free runs at Low depth, under a minute; Plus goes up to a few minutes
  • Limit the search to a year range or to one collection in your library
  • The draft opens as a normal document: edit it, cite more and export it
  • On Plus, every reference is shown in full

06 · Review

Check the draft before you hand it in

Writing a thesis with Papero →
  • Source check flags cited papers that are retracted, preprints, rarely cited or could not be checked
  • Claims finds sentences that need a citation and offers papers to cite
  • Proofread, Tone of voice and Peer review: spelling and grammar fixes, rewrites to a preset and an AI reviewer's report
  • On Plus, the Citation report checks each cited sentence against the full text of the papers you added a PDF for, and the titles and abstracts of the others

07 · Export

Export a manuscript to Word or LaTeX

Download a .docx file with a title page and page numbers, in the default or a double-spaced manuscript layout. Set the document to APA 7 or MLA 9 and the manuscript follows that style's page layout.

Writing an essay with Papero →
  • APA 7: page numbers at the top right and APA's heading levels
  • MLA 9: your surname next to the page number and a heading with your name, instructor, course and date
  • An AI use statement you can insert to declare the AI help you used
  • On every plan, export a LaTeX project (.zip) or open it in Overleaf
  • On Plus, the reference list is in the file, with live Zotero citations you can restyle in Word
