No. Papero suggests wording for your own argument, and every citation it inserts points to a real paper, either from your own sources or one Papero found. Review each suggestion before you keep it, follow your institution's rules on AI tools and use the AI use statement to declare the help you used.

Text an AI writes can be flagged by AI detectors, and Papero cannot promise it will not be. Papero is built for you to write the argument: edit every suggestion you keep, check each citation, and declare the AI help you used with the AI use statement.

Over 10,000, from APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA 11, Nature and ACS to individual journals' own styles. On Free, APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, Nature and ACS always keep their in-text citations. Other styles show APA unless every citation is a plain number. Plus keeps every style. Switch style in one click without retyping a reference; the full reference list is part of Plus.

Free includes a daily allowance of AI suggestions, rewrites, section drafts, outlines and paper searches. Suggestions count when you accept them: 30 accepted a day, from up to 100 shown. Plus raises each one to a monthly allowance (5,000 accepted suggestions a month, from up to 10,000 shown) and makes the reference list readable, copyable and exportable. Rewrites and section drafts count when you keep the result: on Free you can keep 5 rewrites and 1 draft a day, from up to 15 and 2 generated, and on Plus 500 rewrites and 50 drafts a month, from up to 750 and 75 generated. Reviews (one run of any of the six checks; the Citation report is Plus only) are 3 a month on Free and 50 a month on Plus. Chat answers are 5 a day (up to 30 a month) on Free, from your own PDFs, and 300 a month on Plus. Each account also has a monthly limit on the cost of its AI requests (the Terms of Service have the details), and paper search on Plus has a fair-use daily limit. Daily limits reset at midnight UTC, and monthly limits on the first day of each month.

Yes. Export to Word (.docx) with a title page and page numbers, in the default layout or as a double-spaced manuscript. On Free the citations are plain text and the reference list is left out of the export. On Plus the in-text citations and the reference list are live Zotero citations: open the file in Word with the Zotero plugin to change the style or add sources, and the reference list follows. Readers without Zotero see normal text. This works with Zotero's Word plugin only, and the sources are saved in the file, not linked to your own Zotero library. On Plus you can also export the sources of a document, or of your library, as .bib or .ris.

Yes. The Free plan needs no card and includes a daily allowance of accepted AI suggestions, rewrites, a section draft and paper searches. In-text citations work in full; your reference list shows blurred, and Plus makes it readable, copyable and exportable. Papero is open: sign up free at papero.ai/signup.

This site and the writing app are available in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Korean; in the app, choose yours under Settings, Language. Each document can be written in its own language, and the AI suggestions follow it.

General chatbots answer from what they were trained on and can invent sources. In Papero you search real papers in OpenAlex, or look one up by DOI, PMID, arXiv ID or ISBN through OpenAlex and Crossref, and cite them as you write. On Plus, suggestions and section drafts can cite papers too: your own sources first, then papers found for that section, each one checked before it is shown. Your reference list is built from those papers, never made up.

Yes. Your documents are private to your account, unless you share a link to one, and are never used to train AI models. When you use an AI feature, the text it needs is sent to OpenAI to write the answer; OpenAI does not train on it and keeps it for up to 30 days to check for abuse. Our Privacy Policy has the details.

Papero is built for undergraduate essays, dissertations and theses, literature reviews, journal articles, grant proposals, conference papers, lab reports and case studies.

Free costs nothing. Plus costs $12, £12 or €12 a month, or $96, £96 or €96 a year, VAT included, with the full reference list, Word export with references and higher limits. Papero is open: sign up free at papero.ai/signup.

Yes. You can cancel Plus at any time from your account: it stays active until the end of the period you paid for, you are not charged again, and your documents stay in your account on the Free plan. If Plus is not right for you, write to contact@papero.ai within 14 days of buying it for a full refund. Our Terms of Service have the details.

Yes. Export your references from Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote or Google Scholar as BibTeX (.bib) or RIS (.ris) and import the file into your Papero library, on any plan, up to 1 MB at a time. From Zotero you can also import straight away with your own API key, which you create at zotero.org/settings/keys. Papero keeps it encrypted only if you choose "Remember my key", so you can import again in one click, and deletes it when you disconnect. On Plus you can export your sources as .bib or .ris too. Papero does not keep syncing with those apps. You can import from Mendeley too, by signing in at Mendeley; Papero does not keep that sign-in.

Yes. Dissertations and theses are part of what Papero is built for, along with essays, literature reviews and journal articles. Check your institution's policy on AI tools first, and keep the argument your own.

Yes, on Free and Plus. While you write, Papero keeps a version at most every 10 minutes, and you can save up to 20 named versions per document. Open Version history in a document's menu to preview a version and restore it; the text you had is kept as a version first. Versions are kept for up to 30 days, and space for them is limited: when it runs out, the oldest automatic versions go first.

The Review panel has six checks. Source check looks up the papers you cite in OpenAlex and flags any that are retracted, preprints, rarely cited or could not be checked. Proofread suggests spelling, grammar, punctuation and clarity fixes that you can apply or dismiss. Claims finds sentences that need a citation and offers papers from OpenAlex to cite. Peer review gives an AI reviewer's report with an overall verdict, strengths, weaknesses and questions. Tone of voice rewrites sentences to a preset: academic, concise, accessible or persuasive. The Citation report (Plus) checks each cited sentence against the full text of the papers you added a PDF for, and the titles and abstracts of the others. Each run counts as one review: 3 a month on Free, 50 on Plus.

Yes. Add https://app.papero.ai/mcp as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT and sign in with your Papero account; the assistant never gets your password or an API key. It can then search papers, look up a paper by DOI, PMID, arXiv ID or ISBN, format references in one of nine citation styles, list your documents, read a document's text and references, and show your plan and allowances. It is read-only: it cannot change or delete anything and does not run Papero's AI features. A paper search counts against your search allowance, and on Free, the details of a document's references stay hidden, as they do in the app. You can disconnect it at any time under Settings, Connected apps.
