The guide
Using AI for coursework without breaking the rules
AI can make coursework faster and less stressful, but universities set clear limits. These three habits keep you on the right side of them.
Check the policy first
Rules differ between universities and often between courses. Some allow AI for planning and language, some ban it for graded work. Read your course handbook and ask your tutor if anything is unclear.
When AI help is allowed, you are usually asked to say how you used it. A short, honest statement is better than guessing what counts.
Keep the thinking yours
Your argument is what gets marked. Use AI to get past the blank page, to tidy clumsy sentences and to check grammar, but decide your position and your points yourself.
A good test: could you explain every paragraph in your own words if your tutor asked? If not, rewrite it until you can.
Check every source
Made-up references are one of the quickest ways to lose marks or worse. Open every source you cite and check it says what your sentence claims.
Prefer peer-reviewed sources, note when you cite a preprint, and never cite a paper you have not at least skimmed.
