What is a Revision Strategy?
A revision strategy is a planned way of improving a draft: deciding what to look for, in what order, and how. Revision is about content and structure (is the argument right, clear and well supported?), which makes it different from editing (sentences and style) and proofreading (errors). Most strong writing comes from revision, not first drafts.
Revise From Big to Small
Work on higher-order concerns first, then lower-order ones:
- Argument and purpose: does the draft answer the question, with a clear thesis?
- Structure: are the sections in the best order, and does each paragraph do one job?
- Evidence and analysis: is each claim supported, and explained?
- Paragraphs and flow: topic sentences, transitions and coherence.
- Sentences: clarity and conciseness, then the editing workflow.
Effective Revision Strategies
- Reverse outline: write one line summarising each paragraph; gaps, repeats and jumps become obvious.
- Check each paragraph's structure: point, evidence, analysis, link back to the thesis.
- Read aloud: you hear what the eye skips.
- Change the format: print it, or change the font, to read it as a stranger would.
- Take a break: a day away makes problems visible.
- Get feedback: ask a reader what they think your main point is; see peer collaboration.
- Revise against the brief: go through the marking criteria one by one.
How to Revise Quicker
Do one pass per concern rather than trying to fix everything at once; fix structure before polishing sentences you might cut; and keep a checklist of your own recurring problems. Planning time for two or three rounds is part of iterative writing.
Revising Creative Writing
The same order applies: story and character first (what is this piece about?), then scenes and structure, then sentences. Many writers draft quickly and revise heavily; the advice "write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open" (Stephen King) captures the idea of drafting for yourself and revising for readers.
Why It Matters
Markers reward argument, structure and evidence most, and these are exactly what revision improves. Sentence polish matters less if the paragraph should not be there at all.
