What is AI Autocomplete?
AI autocomplete predicts the next words, sentence or line as you type, and offers it as a suggestion you can accept or ignore. It works like a phone's word prediction, but with a language model that can suggest a whole sentence in your style and on your topic.
How It Works
The tool sends the text around your cursor to a model, which predicts the most likely continuation, a form of text generation. You press a key (usually Tab) to accept it, or keep typing to dismiss it. Better tools also consider the rest of the document and, in academic tools, your sources.
Where You Find It
- Email and documents: Smart Compose in Gmail and Google Docs, and text predictions in Microsoft Word.
- Code: tools such as GitHub Copilot complete whole lines of code.
- Academic writing: in Papero, autocomplete proposes the next sentence from your own papers, with the citation already attached.
Benefits of AI Autocomplete
- Faster drafting, especially for routine sentences.
- Help getting past a blank line when you know what you want to say.
- Fewer typos in the suggested text.
Limitations
- Suggestions tend towards the most common, safest phrasing, which can make writing generic.
- A fluent suggestion can still be factually wrong (see AI hallucination).
- Accepting suggestions without reading them can drift the text away from your argument.
- Many courses have rules on AI assistance; check yours.
Final Tips
Use autocomplete when you know what the sentence should say and want it written faster, not to decide what to say. Read every suggestion before accepting it, and let your own judgement have the final word. Related: smart suggestions and AI writing assistants.
